DownBeat review of Pass it On (2016)
Review of Pass It On from George Fendel, Jazzscene: Now and then it is a kick to discover a true “underdog.”
Well, meet Danny Mixon. He is not a newcomer to
the jazz biz, having played stints with Benny Carter, Kenny
Dorham, Art Blakey, and Frank Foster, among many other
bright lights. The even dozen tunes on this session feature the
pianist in both trio and solo settings. And the tunes cover the
bases quite nicely with selections from jazz classics, the American
Songbook, and two Mixon originals. How very nice to
hear standouts such as “Blue Monk,” “Up Jumped Spring,”
and “Single Petal Of A Rose,” balanced with standards, “The
Very Thought Of You,” “That’s All,” and “Memories Of
You.” Special mention should be made of two Wayne Shorter
tunes, a hard bop gem with a bold melody line called “Yes
And No,” and a silky ballad “Infant Eyes,” which is played
solo. On all these and more Danny Mixon demonstrates
gimmick free, real deal piano chops. Underdog? Not on these
sides! -George Fendel
